was a Newbery Honor Book in 1961 and an American Library Association Notable Book
for Children. It has appeared in paperback and been televised, and finally, in response to
requests from children for a sequel, Selden wrote Tucker's Countryside. The author's
own favorite book, it won a Christopher Award in 1969 and was also included on a
number of the selective lists of the best books of the year. Harry the Cat's Pet Puppy, a
third story about the favorite characters, Chester the cricket, Tucker the mouse, and Harry
the Cat, was an American Library Association Notable Book.
After studying English and classical literature at Yale, Selden won a Fulbright scholarship
to Italy in 1951-52. Besides reading and writing and people, he is interested in archeology
and is extremely fond of music, particularly opera.
